The elevator doors opened onto the sunlit rooftop terrace. He hesitated, his breath catching in his throat. He saw her, leaning against the railing, gazing out at the city skyline. It was her. The same laugh, the same way of tilting her head.

He approached. Each step felt labored, each footfall echoing in his ears. He steeled himself and spoke. “Amy?” The sound of his own voice surprised him. She turned, her face showing nothing, a blank slate.

She frowned slightly, then offered a polite smile. “I’m sorry, I don’t think we’ve met.” His shoulders slumped. He felt a profound sense of loss, a deep ache in his chest. He wanted to disappear.
